The idea of selecting a single word to symbolize and define 2014 came out of an exercise we did at work. We were each assigned to choose one word and to share it with our co-workers during our Christmas lunch. The word I selected is BALANCE.
As I sit here writing about BALANCE, I realize that it is quite overused. People talk about it, write about it and the list goes on and on. It is the one thing that many of us cherish and long for especially when it comes to our personal and professional lives. But it is truly the only word that encompasses my main desire for 2014: to find a happy medium whereby I do not get lost in my work and lose sight of the important things in my life. To stop cannibalizing myself and view my life from a different perspective. And in my case this does not mean a 50 / 50 division between work and family life, in my head it tends to resemble more of a 30 / 70.
BALANCE to me is moderation. It’s your own kind of moderation, your own combination of experiences. The right proportion of ingredients that make you feel whole. Doing what you must do, but also that which you want to do. Doing what you need to do, but also doing something just for the mere fact that you enjoy it.
The beauty of entering a new year is that we are given the possibility of starting over and renewing ourselves. This year brought many wonderful experiences to my life, but it is now time to align certain things that I know for sure are out of place.
I love the idea of having a word as my mantra for 2014. It can be easily accessed to rein me back into my ideal life. Have you thought about one for yourself?
